What is Smishing?
Also known as: SMS phishing, text message fraud
Smishing is phishing by SMS or messenger. The scammer sends a short message in the name of a courier, bank, government agency or fine, with a link to a fake page that asks for card details or a one-time code.
On a phone the full link address is hard to see, and people read messages quickly, on the move. That is exactly why smishing works. In Georgia the most common versions are fake parcel and bank notifications.
How to spot it
- A request to pay a small amount (delivery, fine)
- A shortened or odd-looking link
- A request to share a one-time code
What to do
- Never share a one-time code, even with "the bank"
- Check a parcel in the courier's official app instead
